Hypoallergic dogs

Contrary to popular belief, there is no true hypoallergenic dog. While many people think that allergies are due to a dog’s fur, it’s actually a protein in the saliva that causes the sneezing, itchy and watery eyes. This protein sticks to the dog’s dead flakes of skin, also known as dander. Dogs that are advertised as hypoallergenic are usually those who don’t shed, thus releasing less dander into the air that can be inhaled. However, even dogs that don’t shed still lose hair and release this dander, causing allergies for some and making no dog bread truly hypoallergenic. If you think you may have allergies of any kind, it may be helpful to make an appointment with one of our providers who can better evaluate your symptoms and may suggest allergy testing. – Alysa Blum, PA-C
