Warding off sinus infections

It’s that time of year–cold and flu season. And if your cold often turns into a sinus infection, you may be wondering what steps you can take to prevent this. One important step is hand-washing. However, colds and infections can still happen despite your best efforts. When symptoms like nasal congestion, runny nose or sinus pain begin, it can be helpful to start sinus rinses which help to clear the sinuses and nasal passages. Over the counter oral decongestants, such as Sudafed can aid in decreasing sinus pressure and pain, while bring down inflammation. Lastly, Mucinex can help to thin mucous your body may be producing so you can more easily expel it. If you have tried these steps or your symptoms are persistent, you may benefit from a visit with one of our providers who can offer other treatment options. – Alysa Blum, PA-C
