Consider noise-cancelling headphones: with less background noise, the iPod user is less likely to turn up the iPod’s volume, thus decreasing the chances of hearing loss. That said, if the volume is at maximum levels for more than 5 minutes, it doesn't matter how someone is listening, they are at serious risk of hearing loss.
