If you’re sneezing or itching, or your eyes or nose are running, you’re not alone. About 50 million Americans suffer from allergies. They’re more than a nuisance as they require doctor visits, cause work and school absences, and involve medication expenses.
While allergies cannot be cured, they can be effectively treated with allergen immunotherapy. It targets the underlying sensitivity causing the allergy, rather than only managing the symptoms. Allergen immunotherapy helps to build up your immune system’s resistance to allergens, thus minimizing allergy and asthma symptoms, and improving your quality of life. In fact, it has been shown that people can experience long-term remission of their allergies from immunotherapy.
The ADVENT Sinus & Allergy Center offers two forms of allergen immunotherapy: traditional injections or sublingual (under-the-tongue) drops. Injection immunotherapy is the gold standard in the U.S., proven to be safe and effective. Allergy drops, which are the standard elsewhere in the world, are offered at the ADVENT Sinus & Allergy Center, along with only a few other practices in Southeastern Wisconsin. Allergy drops offer the convenience and comfort of at-home use. They, too, are safe and effective.
Prior to beginning immunotherapy it’s important to make certain that your allergies are correctly identified, since they can change over time. The ADVENT Sinus & Allergy Center will perform an allergy sensitivity test to make an accurate determination. Then, our allergist, Melissa Chudnow, M.D., will prescribe the appropriate immunotherapy. The ADVENT Sinus & Allergy Center gives immunotherapy injections as well as dispenses immunotherapy drops as part of our commitment to offering patients every option for breathing, and feeling, better.
